Why we started
Essentially, I wanted to eat healthier without sacrificing the environment. Most leafy greens sold at major supermarkets are packaged in single-use plastic and are produced by large scale farms. As a person who loves the earth, I felt (and still feel) deep sadness for its destruction at the hands of humans. And for a time, my guilt weighed heavily on me, to the point where I would sacrifice my health in order to do my small part for the planet.

So, I decided I wanted to try grow my own food with minimal harm to the environment. After countless hours of research, I discovered that microgreens were the easiest and most sustainable foods to grow; and so Microps was born.
How we grow microgreens
Indoors...
Vertical...
Hydroponically...
On a mission to grow local food with significantly reduced environmental impacts, hydroponics was the way to go!

Living in the suburbs with no yard, some creativity was in order. So, in the small 1x1 meter store room, I designed and constructed a vertical hydroponic grow system, using reclaimed materials where I could.
This tiny grow room has the capacity to grow 3x3 meters of edible microgreens - 3X the floor size of the room!
This specialised set up allow the microgreens to grow all year round without the use of any chemical weed or pest control. We control the environment and nutrient, leaving us with healthy, fresh, delicious greens!
Sustainability
At Microps do everything we can to ensure your microgreens are produced in the most sustainable ways possible.
Plastic free packaging & growing
Sustainable growing practises
Grow to Order
We plant the seeds in trays made of 100% renewable, sugarcane pulp. These trays are certified home compostable to Australian AS5810 standards and do not contain any PFAS. Your microgreens will be delivered in the tray it is grown in - no new packaging and no extra handling.
We grow on a vertical hydroponic system that allows us to recycle water = 99% less water usage than traditional farming. We have also researched and sourced the most cost effective/sustainable nutrient minerals. The grow media we use is 100% renewable, pH treated coco coir. These are only some of our practises and we're always looking to improve!
At Microps we only grow what is ordered each week. This helps us limit food & general waste, improving our sustainability as a business & community. This may not be the most convenient way to buy fresh produce, but... if you're looking to shake things up and make a positive difference, Microps is definitely where it's at!
